Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are a classic and beloved side dish that's easy to make and incredibly versatile. Here's a basic recipe for making mashed potatoes:

Ingredients:

4 large russet or Yukon Gold potatoes

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter

1/2 to 1 cup milk (adjust to desired consistency)

Season to your taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. You can also consider optional seasonings like garlic, herbs (such as thyme or rosemary), grated cheese, or sour cream.

Instructions:

1.Peel and Dice:

Peel the potatoes and slice them into uniformly sized pieces.

This ensures that they cook evenly.

2.Boil:

Transfer the diced potatoes to a spacious pot and submerge them in cold water, incorporating a dash of salt into the water.. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender. You should be able to easily pierce a potato chunk with a fork without it falling apart.

3.Drain:

Place the potatoes in a colander to drain, allowing them to sit for a minute or two to let any extra moisture evaporate.

4.Mash:

Put the potatoes back into the pot or move them to a spacious mixing bowl.

Substitute "mashing" with "smashing" in the sentence:

Add the butter and start smashing the potatoes with a potato masher.

For a smoother outcome, you can opt for a hand mixer or a potato ricer as well.

5. Add Milk:

Slowly incorporate the milk as you persist in mashing or mixing until you achieve the consistency you desire. Some individuals enjoy their mashed potatoes with a thick and chunky texture, while others prefer them to be smooth and creamy. Add more milk if needed.

6. Season: Season the mashed potatoes with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. At this stage, you can also introduce optional seasonings for added flavor, like minced garlic, fresh herbs, grated cheese, or sour cream.

7.Serve:

Spoon the mashed potatoes into a serving dish and, if desired, top with a pat of butter or extra herbs. Serve while hot.

Mashed potatoes are a versatile side dish that pairs well with a wide range of main courses, from roast chicken to steak to vegetarian dishes. They are also a perfect addition to holiday meals like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Enjoy your homemade mashed potatoes!
